Windows 10 is an operating system for personal computers and workstations developed by Microsoft as part
of the Windows NT family. After Windows 8.1, the system received
the number 10, bypassing 9. The server analogue of Windows 10 is
Windows Server 2016. The system is designed to become common for
different devices, such as personal computers, tablets,
smartphones, Xbox One consoles, etc. A single development platform
and a single store are available. universal applications compatible
with all supported devices. Windows 10 comes as a service with the
release of updates throughout the support cycle. During the first
year after the system was released, users could upgrade to Windows
10 for free on devices running licensed copies of Windows 7,
Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Among the significant
innovations — voice assistant Cortana, the ability to create and
switch multiple desktops, etc. Windows 10 — the latest «boxed»
version of Windows, all subsequent versions will be distributed
exclusively in digital form.
The Windows 10 User Agreement allows
Microsoft to collect numerous user information, a history of its
online activities, passwords to access points, data typed on the
keyboard, and much more.
As of May 2018, Windows 10 has a share of
the operating systems used in the world to access the Internet ▲
45.3% and ranks first in the world in popularity, ahead of the
previous leader, Windows 7, in April 2017. In 2011, at the
conference for Microsoft Worldwide partners, Andrew Lees, head of
Microsoft’s mobile technologies, announced that the company intends
to have a unified software ecosystem for PCs, phones, tablets and
other devices. In December 2013, technical observer Mary Jo Foley
announced that Microsoft was working on an update for Windows 8,
codenamed “Threshold”. Like Blue, which was Windows 8.1, Foley
called Threshold “a wave of operating systems” on several Microsoft
platforms and services planned for the second quarter of 2015.
Foley said that among the goals of «Threshold» was the creation of
a single application platform and development tool for Windows,
Windows Phone and Xbox One, which use a single core — Windows NT.
In April 2014, at the Build conference, Terry Myerson introduced an
updated version of Windows 8.1, in which it became possible to
launch Windows Store applications inside desktop windows and a more
traditional Start menu instead of the initial screen displayed in
Windows 8. The new Start menu uses design after Windows 7, using
only part of the screen and including a list of applications in the
style of Windows 7 in the first column. The second column shows the
tiles in the style of Windows 8. Myerson said that these changes
will occur in a future update, but did not clarify exactly which
one. Microsoft also introduced the concept of a “universal Windows
application”, allowing you to use Windows Store applications
created for Windows 8.1 , on Windows Phone 8.1 and Xbox One, when
sharing a common code base with an interface designed for different
device form factors, and providing the user with data and licenses
for an application to be shared across multiple platforms atforms.
Windows Phone 8.1 has almost 90% of the common Windows Runtime API
with Windows 8.1 on PC.
Screenshots of the Windows build, which,
presumably, was the “Threshold”, leaked to the network in July
2014. They show the previously presented Start menu and Windows
Store applications in windowed mode. September 2014 in the
screenshot of build 9834, which had the name “Windows Technical
Preview”, virtual desktops, a notification center, and a new
“Explorer” icon appeared.
